18, Dead Man’s Float

Spectacular, yet intimate, the one public beach I found offered silky sand and tropical palms, with a gentle shoreline that eased people into the water. Standing chest deep in the Gulf one windless afternoon, after several days of lounging and recuperating from the road, I watched polished waves roll on a languid sea, and imagined the ocean as a mirror where the sun could see itself.
